CHAPTER 8

Ansiel

I held her for as long as she needed. I’d been incredibly harsh with her, but I’d had to be. When I’d seen the spiruken flock lunging for her, the only thing I had imagined was them ripping her apart limb by limb. I imagined her screams, and they haunted me.

She could have died.

I wasn’t sure what had drawn them to her. Typically, they were loners, only hunting in packs in time of great need. I was so very thankful that I had chosen to ride north, that I’d been able to track her movements well enough to find her just in time.

Spiruken weren’t especially dangerous monsters to someone like me, but Layna was human. She wouldn’t have stood a chance without me.

I hadn’t expected her to stay with me. I’d known that I’d have to follow her and force her to let me protect her. What I hadn’t foreseen though was how much seeing her in danger would affect me.

I’d never even considered having a woman by my side.

Until her. Until Layna. The moment I killed the spiruken flock and took her back in my arms, I knew I wouldn’t ever let her go again.

Now I curled my arms around her even tighter, keeping her warm with the thick blanket of my wings. She shivered against me, and I kissed the top of her head.

I drew back just enough to see the flushed features of her beautiful face. Her cheeks were still pink. Her eyes glistened, still dewy from the effects of her crying. I pressed my lips gently against her forehead and she smiled.

“I believe you,” she murmured.

My heart swelled. “That makes me the happiest man in the world, my Layna, but I will never stop proving that to you with every passing day,” I declared. Her small fingers clutched at my chest.

I’d walked this land for hundreds of years, but nothing compared to this. There was nothing more special than holding her in my arms. Her eyelashes brushed my chest. With a soft sigh, she relaxed against me. A few more moments passed, and her breathing evened out. She’d fallen asleep.

Carefully, I lay down without jostling her. I held her close as she slept, savoring every second that she laid with me like this.

This was pure heaven.
